About the Ypsilanti, Michigan Area

Ypsilanti was first settled in the early 1800s on the banks of the Huron River. It was originally called "Woodruff's Grove," after one of its earliest settlers. But in 1825 the community was renamed and chartered "Ypsilanti" in honor of Greek revolutionary war hero Demetrius Ypsilanti. Located in Washtenaw County, Ypsilanti is home to Eastern Michigan University and has a population of 24,846. Today, historic "Depot Town" in Ypsilanti features beautiful Victorian architecture, shops and restaurants.
